There’s something undeniably magical about autumn. We love the way crisp mornings roll in, mountainsides ablaze with fiery aspens and maples, and every roadside pull-off begs you to stop for a photo.
Planning ahead for leaf-peeping season can make all the difference between catching that peak-week glow and pulling up to bare branches. Below, we’ve rounded up some of the most beautiful places to see fall colors in 2025, broken down by U.S. time zones, with the best windows for each. Grab your camera (and maybe a PSL), and let’s go.
Adirondack High Peaks, New York
Best time: Sept 25 – Oct 5
The Adirondacks put on one of the earliest and most dramatic fall shows in the East. Around Lake Placid and Keene Valley, crimson maples and glowing birches reflect off alpine lakes. Hike Cascade Mountain for a 360° view, or simply drive Route 73 and let the pull-offs do the work.
Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia & North Carolina
Best time: Oct 12 – Oct 26
This winding drive is fall color heaven. The ridgelines seem endless, fading from gold to copper as far as the eye can see. Rough Ridge is a must for short-hike views, and sunset at Linn Cove Viaduct is pure autumn magic.
Porcupine Mountains, Michigan (Upper Peninsula)
Best time: Sept 28 – Oct 8
The U.P. feels like a secret this time of year— sugar maples paint the hillsides around Lake of the Clouds in vibrant reds and yellows. Quiet trails and cool lake breezes make it feel like you’ve stumbled into your own private fall wonderland.
Ozark National Forest, Arkansas
Best time: Oct 20 – Nov 3
The Ozarks come alive with warm autumn tones. Drive the Pig Trail Scenic Byway, hike to Whitaker Point (a.k.a. Hawksbill Crag), and watch the valleys ripple with color beneath you.
San Juan Mountains, Colorado
Best time: Sept 20 – Sept 30
Colorado’s fall is quick but breathtaking. Along the Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Silverton, golden aspens shimmer against rugged peaks. Catch it early— one good windstorm and the show is over.
Wasatch Mountains, Utah
Best time: Sept 24 – Oct 6
The Alpine Loop near Provo Canyon is a perfect blend of golden aspens and crimson maples. Stop at Cascade Springs for a short boardwalk trail with big color payoff.
Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
Best time: Oct 18 – Nov 2
Here, waterfalls meet fall colors. Trails like Wahkeena–Multnomah loop and Latourell Falls are framed in golden bigleaf maples, and the Historic Columbia River Highway offers countless roadside views.
Yosemite Valley, California
Best time: Oct 24 – Nov 7
Yosemite’s granite walls glow even brighter when framed with dogwood reds and black oak bronze. Stroll along the Merced River for some of the park’s most photogenic fall moments.
Denali National Park
Best time: Aug 28 – Sept 10
Fall comes early to Alaska. The tundra turns a rich carpet of crimson and gold while snow sprinkles the peaks. Even a short drive along the Park Road rewards you with jaw-dropping color.
Chugach State Park, Anchorage
Best time: Sept 1 – Sept 12
A quick escape from Anchorage, the valleys around Powerline Pass and Glen Alps glow with golden birch and willow before the season shifts to winter.
The only downside to chasing fall colors? Chilly mornings and breezy overlooks that sneak up on you. That’s where the Selk’bag comes in. Part sleeping bag, part adventure suit, it keeps you cozy from trailhead dawn to starlit campfire nights— without the constant bundle/unbundle dance.
Zip into a Selk’bag, slip on the booties, and enjoy peak-leaf season in total comfort. Because let’s be honest: the only thing better than catching the last maple leaf flutter down is staying warm while you do it.
