Skip the Skis: Other Winter Activities To Fill Your Needs
The Polar Vortex. Road closures. “Snowed-in” messages to your boss Monday morning. If there’s one thing that sticks out to us in 2019 thus far, it’s the crazy weather, and thus some wild snow for much of the country. Indeed, the mountains have been our beckoning call this winter, and with this much snow we think that’ll be the case through the rest of the season. But skiing and snowboarding can be rather costly, and a bit exhausting weekend after weekend. So it was time to put on our thinking-caps and dream up some other awesome snow activities. Here’s how we’ll be spending the next few weekends, and how you might want to too!
Still Snow, Sans Ski:
Snowshoeing
If you’ve never been snowshoeing, we understand that your eyes may be leaning towards a roll. But hold your roll, becauses snowshoeing is actually a wonderful, and addicting winter activity! It not only alleviates cabin fever, but is also good exercise, and extremely cost-effective. So if you have been scoffing at the outrageous lift tickets, then opt for snowshoes this Saturday instead. And to add the cherry on top, it’s the perfect snow activity for all ages and degrees of winter-adventurers.
Snowmobiling
Like Jet Skiing in summer? So do we. And we love its winter sister, the snowmobile, just as much. We recommend doing a professionally organized tour to be safe and see some awesome backcountry of your favorite mountain that you may not have accessed on skis. Snowmobiling is the go-to remedy for the over-skied adrenaline seeker.
Sledding
We know, we know. This is the obvious one right? Well as much you may think it is, really ask yourself the last time you hit the slopes on the sled. We’re betting it’s been a number of years, and we’re also betting that if you gave it a go now you’d be just as happy as you were in your younger years.
BONUS a.k.a. Nothing to do with Snow
Facing that familiar crossroad of getting after it outside or taking some much needed R&R? We feel you. Here are a couple ideas for the latter:
Free Museum Days
The winter months are the time to take advantage of playing tourist in your city and check out the museums you always recommend to visiting friends, but have never been to yourself. Many cities also offer free museum days on certain days of the month, so be sure to check online before going.
Take a Hands-on DIY Class
Screen-printing, welding, leatherworking, water marbling, chocolate making, ceramics, painting -- the possibilities are nearly endless (depending on where you live). Do a quick search and see what’s available near you and do some work with your hands. Find that new hobby, yo!
Movie Marathon
The Oscars are over, and now it’s finally time to get what everyone is talking about by binging all the winners, and if time, all the nominees.
